THE ESSENTIALS OF NUTRITION

HEALTHY CHOICES, HEALTHY YOU!

How to Achieve a Healthy Lifestyle

The evolving landscape of nutrition highlights several trends that can enhance our well-being. Plant-based diets are gaining traction, emphasizing whole foods and reducing animal products for better health. The focus on gut health underscores the importance of probiotics and prebiotics in promoting digestion and overall wellness. To maintain a balanced diet, aim for a colorful plate filled with diverse fruits and vegetables, practice mindful eating, and opt for whole grains like brown rice over refined options. Staying hydrated is essential, as drinking water can prevent mistaking thirst for hunger. Small, sustainable changes can yield significant benefits. For instance, swapping sugary drinks for water and adding just one more serving of vegetables to your meals can enhance your health without a complete overhaul. By embracing these trends and making gradual adjustments, you can foster a healthier lifestyle that supports both physical and mental well-being. Every small step counts on your journey to better health!

An Interview with Reina Briganti, FNP
What advice would you give to individuals looking to improve their eating habits?

Change is difficult. Don’t try to change everything all at once. Make small changes frequently to keep the changes more sustainable. Don’t look at the changes as a short-term situation, it should be viewed as a lifestyle change. We can’t heal unless we change what was causing the problem to begin with. Hippocrates, an ancient Greek physician, said, “Before you heal someone, ask him if he’s willing to give up the things that make him sick.”

Can you explain the relationship between nutrition and mental health? How does diet influence mood and cognitive function?

Many processed foods have neurotoxins and hormone disruptors that can impact our physical and mental health.

What are some common misconceptions about nutrition that you encounter in your practice, and how can we address them?

I think there are a lot of misconceptions about what healthy eating and nutrition consist of. Since the 1940s when Ansel Keys made the recommendations that would form dietary guidelines, fat has been considered bad for us. However, many studies now show that healthy fats are good for us and make our bodies work better. Things like eggs, salmon, and avocados are good. Where processed fats are not healthy for us. Processed food and drinks are causing many health and mental health problems that we see in our patient population.

What role does nutrition play in overall health and well-being, and how can it impact chronic diseases?

Nutrition is probably the #1 key to good health and wellbeing. People may have genetic factors that predispose or increase risks for certain disease, but nutrition can mitigate how it is expressed.
